Granite Quarry-to-Factory Supply Chain in China

Granite Quarry-to-Factory Supply Chain in China

  • January 6, 2026

China’s granite supply chain for monuments and tombstones is structured to move natural stone from open-pit quarries through processing clusters to international export logistics hubs. For overseas monument importers, wholesalers, distributors, and funeral supply companies, understanding each stage—quarrying, factory processing, customization, quality control, and shipping—helps manage procurement risk, cost, and lead time.

Quarrying begins with block extraction at large deposits located across several provinces. Chinese quarry regions supply a wide range of colors and grain patterns suitable for headstones and memorials. Block quality is assessed by visual inspection and by basic material tests such as density and water absorption to gauge suitability for outdoor monuments. Blocks are then sawn into slabs or smaller blocks depending on product design. Transport from remote quarries to coastal or inland factories is typically handled by heavy truck with logistical coordination to minimize breakage during handling.

Factory processing transforms raw slabs and blocks into finished memorials through several controlled steps. Primary sawing uses diamond wire saws or gang saws to produce slabs and standard-sized blocks. Precision cutting and shaping are performed with CNC routers and waterjet systems guided by CAD/CAM files provided by the buyer or generated by the manufacturer. Surface finishes for headstones and tombstones include polished, honed, flamed, and brushed finishes, while edge profiles and vase or base components are produced to specification. Lettering and artwork are achieved via sandblasting with custom sandblast masks, laser engraving for fine detail, or CNC carving for relief designs. Factories commonly offer mounting of bronze or stainless-steel fittings, application of granite sealers, and assembly of multi-piece memorials prior to inspection.
Customization is an important value-add for international buyers. Most Chinese manufacturers accept CAD drawings, templates, or physical samples and can produce bespoke memorials, family plots, and cemetery monuments in small to large runs. Minimum order quantities vary by factory and product complexity; buyers should clarify sample and tooling charges, approval processes for prototypes, and lead times—sample approvals typically take one to two weeks, while bulk production can require several weeks depending on seasonal demand.
Quality control standards in reputable facilities include incoming material inspection, in-process dimensional checks, surface finish verification, and final inspection against approved drawings and samples. Many factories implement documented quality assurance procedures and will accommodate third-party inspections by SGS, Intertek, or buyer-appointed inspectors. Photographic records, measurement reports, and test certificates can be provided prior to shipment. For certain markets, tests for granite porosity, compressive strength, and colorfastness under UV exposure may be requested to ensure long-term performance as outdoor monuments.
International shipping considerations encompass secure packaging, documentation, and transport mode selection. Finished monuments are typically crated in fumigated wooden crates compliant with ISPM15, with corner protection, foam blocking, and palletization to prevent movement during sea freight. Export documentation usually includes commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and certificate of origin; buyers should confirm HS codes and any local import requirements such as permits or cemetery regulations. Shipping options range from full container loads (FCL) for large orders to consolidated LCL shipments for smaller volumes, with FOB, CIF, or DDP terms negotiable. Major export ports serving the stone industry include Shanghai, Xiamen, Qingdao, and Tianjin, with inland transport coordinated from factory clusters to port terminals.

Understanding the end-to-end supply chain—from quarry selection and material testing, through CNC-based customization and documented quality control, to crating and international shipping—enables buyers to source memorials that meet technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and cemetery standards while managing cost and lead time.
